Uber and Lyft have introduced and updated their apps to include payment with Apple Pay. What does this mean to the user?
Simplicity! A new Uber or Lyft user wont have to enter their card information to use the service. Apple Pay allows someone to store up to 8 debit/credit cards on their iPhone and select default information for billing and shipping.
For example say a new user finds themselves in need of a ride. They find www.myfreelift.com 🙂 and see that they can get a free ride to their location by signing up with promo code UBERFREELUV on Uber or FMKQCB on Lyft. So they sign up and instead of having to enter their payment information they just select Apple Pay. That would be magical! Too bad that is not how it works.
I tried doing that and in order to sign up you still have to enter your name, email, mobile number and a payment option. Options for payment are debit/credit card or PayPal. Might be a matter of having to update the signup process on the app or that Uber wants your information and if they simplify it by using Apple Pay they might not get the info they want.
Because that would be awesome, a new user downloads the app. Taps Ride Now and then taps Apple Pay and their car is requested.
A current user will see that in addition to the cards they have added to the service Apple Pay now shows up. Since I think Apple has better security for holding my finance information I tried deleting all my cards so I would just pay with Apple Pay, the app didn’t let me. So I’m forcefully leaving one card on file.
Apple Pay is new and I’m sure soon different companies will find better ways so simplify our payment process.
