On my recent trip to the east coast I visited New York City. I landed at JFK and was fortunate enough to stay at West Village, NY a few blocks away from Time Square. This story is about how I got to the heart of NYC from JFK airport for free.

I arrived late at night and since I was on a long trip with photo equipment I had a carry on and a large suitcase I had checked in. This means I didn’t want to figure out the subway to Manhattan with all my luggage. So I thought I would pay up and take an Uber to the Hotel.
When I opened the Uber app it told me UberPool was available. It indicated I could split some of the cost with another rider if the app could find a rider with a similar route. It also gave a few rules, like it could only be up to two passengers per party and you couldn’t delay the driver more than two minutes. I thought why not and I gave it a try.
To use UberPool all you have to do is select yes for UberPool and the rest of the request is the same. When my Uber arrived it already had another passenger. It was a really cool guy who lives in NYC and we chatted all the way to my hotel.
When I checked the Uber app it read that the ride was $0.
This is how it broke down, Base Fare $1.50, Distance $11.80, Time $3.80, Tunnel Toll $5.33 for a total of $22.43. The receipt also indicates that by using UberPool I saved $17.11 meaning the ride would have been close to $40.
Now the reason I didn’t have to pay the $22.43 is because I had a free ride credit for $30 and that covered the cost.
So if you find yourself in New York City consider using UberPool to cut the cost of the ride. If you haven’t used Uber then sign up here with promo code UPN1T to receive a free ride credit.
Using Uber in NYC was fun and very convenient. I didn’t use the subway once, even though it might have been faster. Relaxing to my destination was great and energizing to keep me going.
